    From Warren Hasty.
William Sprague appeared in the1900 Census at Grand Lake Stream, Maine with wife Amy andsons Joseph David and Charles Harris along with their monthand year of birth.

    From John Harris Sprague, correspondent.
Our last correspondence was inregard to Amy Thornton and if she was  the daughter ofJoseph Sprague and Lydia Bailey or the Granddaughter ofthem.   Our mutual suspicions were of the latter.
I had mentionedto you that I had sent for William and Amy's marriage certificate but that Amy's name was listed as Anne on itwhich only added to  the confusion.  I think Ihave found the source of that confusion.
Just this pastThursday I finally received the records for William's military pension.  While there isn't and whole lot tooffer from them there  are some interesting items.
According to asworn statement by William in a "CLAIM OF A SURVIVOR OF THE MEXICAN WAR FOR PENSION" dated June 7th 1897 hestates that he is  married to an AME THORNTON (and theclerk who copied this information for the  marriagecertificate read it as Anne) and that William declares thathe was  born in St. Patrick's Parish and not St.George's Parish (as reported by  Warren VincentSprague's book 1941, pg. 209.)  However, on twoother  documents I received her name is spelled as AmaSprague or Ama Thornton one a  sworn statement byWilliam and another a sworn statement by Amy. However, it  appears that Amy could not "defend" thespelling of her name because she was unable to read orwrite as all documents by her are "made her mark" witnessed.
It appears thatWilliam had contracted Typhoid Fever during his service in the Company "A" 20th Regiment Maine Volunteerduring the Civil  War.  I must admit that I havenot had much time to research this since I  obtainedthis information but it appears that this unit was involvedwith  engagement in the Battles at Gettesburg whichmay be the case as William  states that "Typhoid feverwas contracted at or near Portland Maine during  thefirst part of July A.D. 1865 - The result of beingoverheated & suddenly  drenched with rain whilemarching from Richmond in May previous"
Williams servicein the War with Mexico was with Co. "E" of Capt. A. T. Palmer in the 9th Regiment commanded by Colonel T.B.Ransom and  participated in engagements that I haveyet to decipher as it is Spanish  and  written orin quill pen.

    Notes:

From Ronald L. Strout, correspondent.     You state that Amy was thedaughter of Joseph Thornton and Lydia Bailey and born on 10June 1831 in Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.     Now both Joseph Thornton and LydiaBailey were born in 1772. That would make them 59 when Amywas born.  This is obviously too old for Lydia. Also, Lydia and Joseph raised all their children, of whichAmy was not one, in Baileyville in Washington Co.Maine.  This information comes from "The History ofEarly Baileyville, Maine and its Pioneers" by Albert W.Bailey.     Joseph and Lydia had a son, JosephJr. who married Mary Ford. Joseph Jr. and Mary Ford wereborn in 1804 and 1808 respectively. That would have madethem 27 and 23 when Amy was born.  This is morereasonable.  I believe that Amy Thornton was thedaughter of Joseph Jr. and Mary Ford. The following is apaper I wrote supporting my hypothesis:                        Ancestry of Amy ThorntonThe first piece of information regarding Amy's parentage isfrom the book Sprague Families in America, 1940-1941Supplement by Warren Vincent Sprague.  He refers toWilliam and Amy (Thornton) Sprague as one of the Mainefamilies with possible roots to Francis Sprague, butunresolved at the time of his writings.  Also, heclearly states that Amy was born June 10, 1831 in GrandLake Stream as the daughter of Joseph Thornton.  Hestates that Joseph was a mill-wright; served in the MexicanWar and the Civil War and resided in Grand Lake Stream,Maine.  No wife is identified for Joseph Thornton bythis author. The next area of research investigated was The Family ofJames Thornton, Father of Hon. Mathew Thornton by CharlesThornton Adams (published 1905).   In the fourthgeneration, Mathew Thornton (William3,James2,James1) wasborn in Kingsfield (now Palmer), MA and moved to NewBrunswick in 1783.  With him was his twelve year oldson Joseph Thornton.  Mathew and his family finallysettled, about 1786, at the Ledges between St. Andrews andSt. Stephen, where he resided for the rest of his life.Joseph Thornton moved, about 1802 when he was 31 years old,to Baileyville, Maine.  He married Lydia Bayley, daughter of the first settler of Baileyville, NathanielBayley.  Two of Joseph's sister also married in theWashington County area of Maine.  Leah Thorntonmarried Abiel Sprague of Sprague Falls, Baileyville. Jane Livermore Thornton married Eli Sprague ofMachias.  The book states that the descendants ofJoseph Thornton Sr. are to be found in Mane. One of Joseph's sons was Joseph Thornton Jr. Born in1804.  He married Mary Ford.  Mary was born in1808.  The presumed parents of Amy are Joseph ThorntonJr. and Mary Ford. The next piece of the puzzle is obtained from the bookletHistory of Early Bailey Maine and its Pioneers, genealogyof the Nathan Bailey Families by Albert W. Bailey(published 1972).    The children of JosephThornton Jr. are listed in this booklet.  There arenine identified by name plus the note that threeunidentified daughters were born before 1830.  None ofthe named children are identified as Amy Thornton. There is one girl born in 1831 named Isabella. Could thishave been Amy?  Was "Amy" a nickname used byIsabella?  Might Amy have been one of the girlsmarried prior to 1830?The next item in the investigation was a review of theCensus Indexes.  I reviewed the Indexes for Thorntonfamilies in Washington County in the years from 1790through 1860.      There is noevidence of any Thornton families in Washington County inthe 1790 or 1800 Census.  In the years 1810 and 1820Joseph Thornton is listed as "head of family".In 1830 Samuel is listed in addition to Joseph Jr. Samuel is probably the son of Joseph Sr.  In theHistory of Baileyville booklet, Samuel is stated to havehad 3 girls by an early marriage prior to 1930. This wouldexplain his being listed as a "head of family" in the 1830census.  Joseph Jr.  would have been 24 in 1830and his wife would have been 22.  In 1840 threeadditional sons of Joseph Sr. are listed.  These areNathaniel (age 30), William (age 39), and Eli age27).  For some reason Samuel in not listed in thiscensus. In 1850 two additional children of Joseph Sr. arelisted.  These are Abiel (age 35), and Sarah (age51).  Sarah may be listed due to a presumed death ofher husband William Anderson, leaving her as the head offamily.     I should be noted that Joseph Sr.is not listed after the 1820 census.  It may be thatby 1830, when he would have been 59 years old, he wasliving with one of his sons and not listed therefore as ahead of family.     The conclusion to this review ofthe Washington County census records, is that the onlyfamily in the county  with a father named JosephThornton in the time frame that fits the 1831 birth of "AmyThornton" is the family of Joseph Thornton Jr. and MaryFord.  From this analysis, it is assumed that theparents of Amy Thornton were Joseph Jr. and Mary Ford.     There are only five other Thorntonfamilies that are in Maine in 1810.  They are (by headof family) William (Kennebec Co.); John, Joshua, Susanna, and William (all of Lincoln Co.) and Thomas G. (YorkCol).   There is only one Joseph Thornton family, and that is the one in Washington Co. describedabove.   In addition there are no other JosephThornton families except those described above throughoutthe period 1790 to 1850.

From John Harris Sprague, correspondent.     According to information that Iobtained from the past town clerk of  Grand LakeStream, Michele Bagley, Amy Sprague died there on April 25,1913.   This information was sent to me in theFamilyTree Maker format.  When I went  to thefacts sheet for Amy it listed her place of birth asBaileyville, ME  but no date, gave her place of deathas Grand Lake Stream with the date and  it had as athird fact that she was a widow - maiden name unknown.         I thenwhen to parents of Amy and the under name of mother wasthe  name Thornton which I thought was odd because Ithought it was her maiden  name and not her mother's.I still believe this to be so but as of yet have  notsent her death certificate but plan to do so this week.        Anotherinteresting piece of information was under medical forAmy  the was the notation that she lived 81 years, 11months, and 15 days.  This  has her deathoccurring just 15 days short of her 82nd birthday, which bymy  calculations, would put her date of birth at April10, 1831.  Sure would be  nice to find ifIsabella was born in that month because it was the sameyear  that Ron Strout states in his hypothesis.     I recently requested a copy of amarriage certificate from Calais and  it states thefollowing:     "I hereby certify that I have thisday joined in marriage Mr. William Sprague and Miss AnnThornton both of Calais, as the law directs in such casemade and provided. Solomon Coy, J. P. Calais, March 26th1850
Recorded by methis 22d day of August A.D. 1905 from originalcertificate.            S.D. Morrell, City Clerk "
