| 3 | From Howard Hickman, correspondent, note of October 8th, 2007 The only Church record of Robert and Mary's family is the baptism of their second daughter, Elizabeth. It is recorded on May 7, 1793 at Jacob's "Old Dutch" Lutheran Church in German Township, Fayette County, Pa. Many of Mary Magdalena's relatives lived near this church and had their children baptized there. As were most residents of early Greene County, Robert was a farmer, living off the land. In the tax records of 1817-1819, he is also listed as a "carpenter." His skill in carpentry must have been notable, as the occupation of carpentry was passed down through many of his descendants. Robert was successful in his life, as he expanded his homestead, by purchasing property of his adjacent neighbors. He owned a total of 97 acres in 1842. Greene County Court records show that Robert was a frequent party in lawsuits over the years. In particular 1805-9, he was involved in seven different cases. The reasons for the lawsuits are unknown, except for two. In August 1805, Robert sued John Renner for assault and battery on his daughter, Nancy. In February 1807, James Corbett sued Robert and three other neighbors for "assaulting, beating, and false imprisoning." Robert and Mary Hickman had five children: Nancy, Elizabeth, Samuel, Abraham, and Cassander. Nancy married James Vandruff and raised their children in Whiteley Township. Elizabeth married Barnet Renner and lived in Perry Township. Samuel married Elizabeth and divorced, and his children grew up in Franklin and Whiteley Townships. Abraham married Mary Nelson and lived in Whiteley, Perry, Dunkard, and Washington Townships. Cassander married Hiram Nichols and lived in Wayne Township. Unlike many families that migrated west from Greene County, all of Robert and Mary's children remained in Greene County throughout their lives. A few descendants still live in the County today. He died on 29 Oct 1842 at Whiteley Twp, Greene Co, PA. Robert Hickman died on October 29, 1842. He wrote his last will on September 3, 1841. It states in part: "...I give and bequeath to my grandsons Jesse and Morgan Hickman, sons of my son Samuel Hickman, two tracts of land in Franklin Township...My will is that my said son Samuel shall have free access and support of the two tracts...by making use of the means of industry of the same...I direct my Executors...to sell...all the tracts of land where upon I now live...the proceeds to be equally divided amongst my heirs...I also direct that the...value thereof (two tracts of land in Franklin Twp.) to be deducted out of my son Samuel's share, the residue as my other heirs, viz: Abraham, Nancy, Elizabeth, & Casander...I also order...to deliver to my son Samuel free of cost or charge all my wearing apparel...I order... to have around my wife as well as my own grave, if not sooner done, a suitable & sufficient stone wall as well as headstones..." The receipts filed in Robert's estate papers are the following heirs: Hiram Nichols & wife, James Vandruff, Samuel Hickman, Elizabeth Renner, and Aba Hickman. Robert and Mary are buried on their farm in a small graveyard, at the top of Frosty Run. They had no children. Winona was a most wonderful person, very much loved by her nieces. We still talk about her and remember her as a special person. Even after 40 years if one of my sisters mentions "Auntie Nonie" I automatically smile, the memories are so pleasant. | Family / Spouse: F110683

| 11 | NOTE: The following is provided to give detail on the research effort that has gone into recording this family as is shown on the Sprague Website. Careful study of the following will lead to the conclusions documented but also underline areas where absolute proof is missing. From Jane Sanderman Mason, correspondent, note of March 19, 2010 As I wrote in my email of 3/18, Nettie/Nellie/Antoinette is proving a real challenge. I still believe Nettie is the following Frank and Antoinette (Hodge) Sprague. Going back to my email of 3/14 I wrote I believed the following are the same person, Antoinette Hodge - Nellis SDB299574 Nettie SDB299579 As the entry for Nettie SDB299579 lists the children I believe belong to this woman, I have sent in material under each name: Edna J. and Carrie W. I did not research Floyd as there is already quite a bit of information. There is also a son Sydney S. who I have done nothing on so far. A brief search found no obvious Sydney so I have put him off. Looking at Antoinette. Your correspondent Philip's baby book reported a maiden name of Hodge. Although he does not say he descends from Floyd he reports his father was Floyd's son Maurice. According to the 1900 census Floyd has a sister Edna J. b c1879 in New York. His mother is b c1857 also in New york. So I looked for a likely Sprague candidate which included an Antoinette b c1857 in New York and an Edna b c1879 in New York in the family and found - 1880 New York Sullivan county Fremont ED97P39S#161 30June Frank Sprague 24 laborer MI NY MI Nettie 23 wife NY NY NY Edna 1 dtr NY Another interesting thing in this census is that the husband, Frank, was b in Michigan, his father b in New York and in 1880 he is living in New York with a wife b in New York. A somewhat unusual combination. I worked backwards to find a birth family for Antoinette and bingo, check out her father's given name! As Antoinette's son is named Floyd Billings, I think this has to be the correct family. - 1860 New York Sullivan county Rockland P.O.Liberty R866P22/210 23June Billings G. Hodge 34 farmer real estate $600/personal $100 [all b NY] Catharine 28 Cordelia 5 Antonette 3 Joel 1 Dick: Note James E. Sprague is SDB35705. Also note Frank's family, Grandfather Ephraim SDB181486, came from Sullivan county Rockland. So at least a couple reasons Frank could have met Antoinette. 1870 New York Sullivan county Rockland P23S#694 28Aug next door to a James E. Sprague b1819 NY and wife Samantha 52 and family Billings G. Hodge 44 farmer real estate $1500/personal $700 [all b nY] Catharine 38 children including Antenett 14 I suspect from the 1880 census that this is "Nettie." About Frank: One of the few things we know is Frank is not in the picture in 1900. Nettie describes herself as widowed. That probably is the case but we know women often reported that if divorced or seperated so we cannot be 100 per cent sure that Frank has died. [in SDB]District 118, Dwelling 122, Family 122 census on 8 Jun 1900 in Stewardson, Potter Co.,PA, USA.3 Nellis Sprague, head, w, f, Jan 1857, 43, wd, 22, 6-4, NY, NY, NY, boarding house keeper (ancestry.com shows alt spelling of Waller) Edna J Sprague, daughter, w, f, Jan 1879, 21, s, NY, NY, NY, dress maker Floyd B Sprague, son, w, m, 1881, 18, s, NY, NY, NY, at school Carrie W Sprague, daughter, w, f, May 1887, 13, s, NY, NY, NY, laborer lath? will? They agree their mother was b NY. census, child, father bp 1910 Edna MI; Floyd MI; unable to locate Carrie 1920 Edna NY; Floyd US; Carrie MI 1930 Edna MI; Floyd MI; Carrie MI As only Edna J. would have been in the 1880 census, I searched for her looking for a Sprague father b Michigan with a mother whose name might have some similarity to "Nellis" who was born in New York. The only possibility I came up with is the Sullivan county couple. 1880 New York Sullivan county Fremont ED97P39S#161 30June Frank Sprague 24 laborer MI NY MI Nettie 23 wife NY NY NY Edna 1 dtr NY It is unclear to me if Frank is 24 or 27 in the 1880 census. To add to the confusion, the son of James Oliver in 1860 is 7 and in 1870 14. So b either c1853 or c1856. Looking for a Frank b 1852-1857 in earlier census I found two other candidates with the MI NY combination. - This Frank is SDB40915. 1860 michigan Eaton county Vermontville Pandora A. Sprague, Mary (I181557), 5, F, W, Born NY. Sprague, Aurelia (Aurilla) (I181559), 2, F, W, Born NY. In 1880 I find only two Frank Spragues who fit. The one in New York and one in Michigan who reports he is 26 and is m to an Eva. I think this must be Vedder's son. The Frank who is Pandora's son m a Stella and moved to Missouri. Dick: The above is the long way around to say I feel pretty certain this Frank is the son of James Oliver! But what happened to Frank. Did he die in Sullivan county New York or in Potter county Pennsylvania. All children are b in New York (1879 - 1888). Searching Sullivan county produced almost no cemeteries online so no help. Searching the cemetery index of The Painted Hills Genealogy Society of Potter county produced no Frank Sprague. As later the family lived in Steuben county New York I also checked that cemetery index also posted by Painted Hills Genealogy Society and found no Frank. So I do not know what happened to Frank. I believe that Antoinette remarried but this is probably too much of a jump to print in the SDB as fact. Perhaps a note? The thing that bothers me is that if this is Antoinette then where is she and Robert buried. Most of the Steuben county cemeteries are indexed and online. No Roder, Roeder, Rhoder, etc.. Also, not in Potter county cemetery index. ?second marriage for Antoinette (Hodge) Sprague?? 1920 New York Steuben county Addison "outside of village" ED74P8A/760S#8 22Jan Robert B. | 28 | Tradition in the family is that Isaac's matrimonial proposals were not favorably entertained by the parents of his intended wife, and the record of publishments confirms this statement; for we find in the Hingham records of marriage intentions the following: "Isaac Tower and Mary Sprague ... The BANS forbidden by John Sprague, who underwrote the publishment as the law directs." This was dated Oct. 1, 1768. Tradition further says that this impediment did not prevent continued proceedings, as we find from the same records, under date "Dec. 23, 1769", that "Isaac Tower and Mary Sprague intend marriage"; and this second intention was carried into effect. But as the marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. John Brown instead of the minister of the parish where the bride's parents resided, according to the custom of the times, The Rev. J. Brown being the minister of Cohasset, where Isaac Tower resided, we may infer that the opposing father was not fully placated; but, like many another father, he probably found that parental guidance in matters of the affection has its limitations. | Family / Spouse: F28254
