"Supplement to Sprague Families in America", by Dr. Warren Vincent Sprague, 1940, page 30. Perez Sprague of Union, CT., Knox Co., OH, and probably Union Co., OH. Born abt 1770-1780. He owned considerable real estate in Knox Co., and purchased his first piece, March 27, 1816, a lot in Mt. Vernon. Thomas (his brother) of Clinton Twp., purchased his first piece of Perez Sprague and Catherine, his wife, March 29, 1826, which was 57 acres in Miller Twp. Perez was a private in Capt. Joseph Walker's Co., War of 1812; County Commissioner in 1828; member House of Representatives from Knox Co., 1834-5 and member of Senate, 1886-8.
NOTE: The Supplement lists ten possible children and their wives. The children listed are said to be "some of his children and grandchildren".
From Jack R. Sprague, correspondent:
Public Records of Knox County, 3 July 1852, W. H. Cochran, Justice of the Peace.
".....Perus Sprague, deceased, who died September the 20th A.D. 1845, leaving a widow who is now married to one John Hardin a resident of Auglaize Co Ohio, he also declares that he verily believes the said Perus Sprague to be the same identical Perus Sprague who was a soldier in the war with Great Britain, declared by the United States on the 18th of June, A.D. 1812, that the said Perus Sprague enlisted at Mt. Vernon, Knox County Ohio, on or about the 1st of May A.D. 1812 in the company commanded by Captain Joseph Walker....." . Note that due to his death in 1845, this Perez would not have been able to serve in the Ohio State Senate 1886-1888.
By analyzing the 1830 and 1840 Census records it indicates that five additional children born between 1830 and 1840 resided in the Perez Sprague household. These may have been grandchildren or others. However, court documents would suggest that Perez Sprague and Catherine Sprague had five children between between 1830 and 1841.

William L. Sprague was born abt 1830; he died November 25,1858 in Oquake, IL. The Knox Co., OH newspaper lists his obituary: "Of Typhoid fever at his residence in Oquake, Henderson Co., IL, on the 25th of November, 1858. Mr. William Sprague, formerly of this city (son of Perez and Catherine Sprague) in the 28th year of his age. He left a wife, one child and many friends to mourn his early departure from life." A William McCellan was appointed executor for the estate.
Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio Newspaper, 1858 On 19 Mar 1852 William L. Sprague was appointed guardian of Dorcas P. Sprague, Sarah Catherine Sprague, Amy Charlotte Sprague, And Amanda Sophia Sprague. Note the date is after the separation of Catherine Sprague from John Hardin.
Knox County Records, "Letters of Guardianship", 19 Mar 1852 "Be it remembered that on this day the court appointed William L. Sprague guardian of Amanda Sophiah Sprague, age 11 years minor heir at law of Peres Sprague late of the County of Knox delivered upon his entering into hand in the sum of one hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs with John McElroy and Enoch Critchfield who are approved of as bail whereupon the said William Sprague approved in open court and accepts said appointment and gave bond accordingly."
Probate Court of Knox County, 3 May 1852 Be it remembered that on this day, Dorcus P. Sarah Catherine Sprague(1836-)

Mrs. Charles Fawcett, correspondent
The 1870 census for Marengo, Iowa County, IA lists the following people in the next listing after Amanda Sprague and her son William Edmund:
Edmund Hopkins 40 M W no occupation
Amy Hopkins F W
Maude Hopkins F W
Ester Hopkins F W
Catherine Sprague 34 F W school teacher
Could this be two of Amanda's sisters, Amy Charlotte & Sarah Catherine?
1870 Census for Marengo County, Iowa
Amanda Sprague was born August 22, 1841 in Mt. Vernon, Knox County, OH. The 1860 Census for Knox County, OH lists as head of household a Catherine Sprague, age 60, female, white, and a occupation of seamstress. Catherine's birth state is listed as Pennsylvania, this is consistent with the information we have on Catherine Critchfield Sprague. Living with Catherine is Amanda Sprague, age 19, female, white, and an occupation of seamstress. Amanda's birth state is listed as Ohio. James H. Christy & Amanda Sprague were married in Knox County on August 9,1860 by L.R. Norton, minister. They had one child, William Edmund born Knox County, OH on June 13,1863. According to the history book "Fall River Pioneers", they were divorced following an incident where Willie was crying in his high chair and James reacted by throwing a butcher knife at the infant. Amanda filed for divorce in Knox Co, OH on September 11, 1865. The divorce was granted in October, 1865. In the decree she charged James with habitual drunkenness and failure to perform marital duties. She was granted custody of William Edmund and the return of her maiden name of Sprague. James was forever enjoined from interfering with the custody of William Edmund. No alimony was given.
Public Records of Knox County, #208 Amanda Christy vs. James Christy, Divorce, Oct 1865 She moved to Iowa, opened a dress shop, and started a new life. As noted previously, two of her sisters may have resided there also. She married Orrin B. Bolton who was born in New York state in 1836. He resided in Marengo, IA where he was sheriff and a prominet local community leader. He married Amanda sometime between 1871-1873. He died 22 Sep 1889 in Marengo, Iowa County, IA. Her som William Edmund retained the name of Sprague and went on to raise a Sprague family of his own.
From Jack Sprague, correspondent. I have a few additions/corrections to what is recorded in "Sprague Families In America", by Dr. W. V. Sprague. (1) The actual birth date of Perez is still unknown. Dr. Sprague said "abt. 1770-1780"; I would not suggest any change in the database at this time but it is likely closer to 1780 or later; (2) Dr. Sprague did not have a death date. If this Perez is the same Perez that Dr. Srpague says was in the War of 1812 then we have definite documentation from Knox County that he died 20 September 1845; (3) Dr. Sprague says he served in the Ohio house; I agree. However, he could not have served in the Ohio Senate based on (a) Dro. Sprague's estimated birth (110 year olds inlegislatures would be well know historically); (4) My only other concern with Dr. Sprague's data is the marriage of child no. 3, Catherine Sprague to a John Harding on 5 Feb 1850. I do not believe that Perez's wife and daughter were both married on the same day to a John Hardin and John Harding, respectively. I have documentation of Perez's second wife marrying and divorcing John Hardin following Perez's death.
This is where the good stuff starts. Dr. Sprague as you well know, prefaced the list of Sprague children with the comment "The following may be some of his children and grandchildren." I believe that Dr. Sprague thought the list was incomplete with that comment. Census records are known for being inaccurate as you well know. However, it is interesting to follow those records for the Perez household. Here goes!
1820 Census
Age 0-9 1M 2F Male must be Joseph R.; Females Martha, Lucy, or Catherine?
Age10-25 1F Must be 2nd spouse: Catherine(birth between 1795-1810)
Age 26-45 1M Perez (birth between 1775-1794)
1830 Census
Age 0-4 1F New female:
Age 5-9 1M 2F New male: 2 new females
Age 10-14 1M 2F Matches for 2 females in 1820
Age 15-19 2M
Age 20-29 1M ????
Age 30-39 1M 1F Perez(birth between 1790-1800!!) Catherine(birth between 1790-1800)
1840 Census
Age 0-4 2F 2 new females
Age 5-9 1M 2F probably 1 new male and 2 new females
Age 10-14 1M 1F
Age 15-19 1M 2F
Age 30-39 1F Catherine(birth between 1800-1810)
Age 50-59 1M Perez (birth between 1780-1790!!)
Conclusions: (1)Based on this data it appears that Catherine Critchfield was born very close to 1800. This is also consistent with Critchfield family histories; (2) If these figures are correct we would conclude that Perez was born abt. 1790 which is different than what Dr. Sprague indicated; (3) In 1830 in appears that there are about nine minor children living in the house, by adding 10 years the 1840 list would indicate that another five children entered the house. This proves nothing other than Dr. Sprague was probably correct when he noted that the list "may be some of his children and grandchildren". The door is certainly open for the possibility of additional children.
I believe that there were at least five more children. In court, a William L. Sprague certified that he was the son of Perez and Catherine Sprague and that was the same Perez that was in Joseph Walker's Company, War of 1812. Court records also show William L. as the Guardian of the 4 minor Sprague children: Dorcus P.; Amy Charlotte; Sarah Catherine; and Amanda S. When William L. died in 1858, his Knox County obit stated that he was the son of Perez and Catherine. More importantly, the death certificate on Dorcus P. states her father was Perez, her mother Catherine, her mother's maiden name was Critchfield. [1]
