- "Sprague Families in America", by Dr. Warren Vincent Sprague, page 528. William Sprague of Sussex Co., NJ, died intestate in 1808. He was probably a brother to Benjamin.
"The New Jersey Sunday Herald", Sunday, May 14, 1978. Vernon, NJ. Many of the area municipalities consist of several sections of "localities", each somewhat self-contained and each with a colorful history. Many of the areas were named in honor of their early settlers. One such community was Sprague Town in Vernon Township. Sprague Town was named in honor of William Sprague, Sr., who settled in Vernon following the Revolution. Sprague Town was considered unique in that it boasted two distilleries as well as a trotting course, blacksmith shop and a schoolhouse.
"History of Sussex County, New Jersey", by James P. Snell, page 348. An early settler named Sprague located upon the present residence of Samuel B. Edsall, having cultivated an extensive tract of land which he purchased. He had three sons, none of whom are now in Vernon. Ichabod Tompkins came in 1802 and became a resident of a portion of the Sprague lands. His death occurred many years since, and the family are not now represented in Vernon. This Ichabod Tompkins was along with John Sprague, Administrators of the estate for William Sprague. It is also possible that Salomi Tompkins (Capt. John Sprague's second wife) is of the same family.
From Henry Berchak. Previous family Sprague researchers report no birth date or place of origin for William Sr. or his wife, Elizabeth, and make statements that William Sr. "settled the township called Sprague-Town shortly following the Revolution, located in Vernon, NJ" They had three children: (1) John (Captain), born September 19, 1771, (2) William, Jr., born December 25, 1776, and (3) Randall, born unknown. No supposition is made in the info I have as to where William Sr., or Elizabeth came from. It just does not go back any further. Don't know why.

I have mentioned that at the time of this deed, Hardyston was where Vernon Township is now. The line between the two changed often. The property mentioned is now in Vernon Township, Sussex County, NJ. The Township is made of many 'sections' and what was the Sprague farm is located in the Vernon section, at the intersections of Route 517, Sand Hill Road and Vernon Crossing. John Sprague's farm is shown on the large 1860 map hanging in the Vernon Township Municipal Building on Church Street in Vernon, NJ
The following is bringing you up to date on my research for William generation 1.
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM #AB SPRAGUE
FIRST GENERATION:
William married Elizabeth: This fact is proven by both of their names being listed as the parents of John Sprague (Capt.) on his death certificate - New Jersey State Library, Bureau of Archives & History, Book AF, pg. 702 The land deed (above) showing property that is now (and was shortly after deed) in Vernon Township, NJ I have a copy of William Sprague's Inventory dated 1 July 1808, naming his son John Sprague and Icabod Tomkins, administrators of his estate. No land is mentioned, only an assortment of livestock, which totaled $305.50. Inventory Book A, pg. 336, Hall of Records, Newton, NJ
Here is a transcription of the inventory of William Sprague. As with all old documents that were hand written and then photo copied, there are certain words I can't make out. If I can't make out a word but think I know what it is I have put (?). If I couldn't make it out at all, I put ---. It always amazes me the amount of times they use &. They are spelled as I found them.
