  "Early Spraggs of Hempstead, Long Island", by John R. Sprague III, J.D., published in "The Genealogist", Spring, 1998, pages 3-42 (note, the reader is left to review the original manuscript for references cited in Attorney Sprague's work.). Elijah was a loyalist and a sergeant in the Queens Co. militia. "Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte", published 1972, page 777 There are two families of Spragues, descended from two Canadian pioneer brothers. Their grandfather was an English clergyman who emigrated to America early in th eeighteenth centry, and settled on Long Island, N.Y., where he reared a family of three sons. One of these sons migrated to Nova Scotia; another crossed into Rhode Island, which was later governed by one of his descendants, Governor Sprague; and the third Elijah, remained and settled at Hemstead. He married Hannah Golden, and had a family of three sons, Samuel, Sylvanus, and Elijah. Smauel and Sylvanus were the two pioneer brothers of Upper Canada; Elijah lived and died in Hempstead. From Ralph Sprague, correspondent, note of October 17th, 2007 I've seen a reference in a book that the Bay of Quinte Spragues were United Empire Loyalists and I can't figure out how. Their uncle Thomas Spragg clearly was (he's the one the book says went to Nova Scotia - New Brunswick was part of Nova Scotia at that time). But I can't find any reference to their father Elijah being a Loyalist. To be one the original had to be a member of a British regiment during the revolution but not a full time member. Sons and daughters and descendents could also be referred to as Loyalists. If the family were Loyaists they would have been driven out of the US within a year or two after 1776. From Hempstead they probably would have been shipped to Nova Scotia and wouldn't have been able to go by land across New York. [5]
