Reviewing the images for 1850 Allegan county Waylandcensus, I find the Rev. James Selking [see following notere name] and family enumerated on page 57/113. He isfollowed thru page 59/118 by 61 families identifiable asAmerican Indian because of their names. There was nocolumn for "indian" in that census.
Interestingly, most names are obviously their native namesbut some English names are beginning to appear among thechildren. There are no English surname male heads offamily listed.
As the James Sprague I am interested in was married inWeyland in 1859 I went next to the 1860 census. Thefollowing marriage record appears to give a surnameof Panasia to the bride. I do not know what thatindicates. Was it an attempt by the Rev. to"europeanize"? Does it indicate her father? Thechief of the tribe at this time (per 1850 census) is Panace.
