Obituary as published in the Wray Rattler, Friday, July 4,1902 and as provided by Gladys Mix, December 16th, 2004. The people of Wray and vicinitywere called upon to pay their last respects to our townsmanand neighbor, Dr. A. R. Hammond, on last Friday. Dr.Hammond died Thursday, June 26, 1902 and was buried thefollowing day from the funeral services conducted by ElderForeman at the Christian Church of which he was an activemember. Dr. Hammond had lived in our midst for anumber of years practicing his profession and conduction adrug store on the north side. Alexander R. Hammond was born inCambridge, Washington County, New York, March 16, 1821, anddied at his home in Wray, Colorado, June 26, 1902, aged 81years, 3 months and 10 days; the cause of his death beingthe much dreaded Bright's disease from which he had been asufferer for more than ten years. He was a faithful minister in theMethodist Episcopal Church for years. He was also apracticing physician. He was married to Emma SpragueLapham June 1, 1887. He was baptized by C. A. Evansat Laird, Colorado, November 20, 1898, uniting with theChurch of Christ at Wray, April 28, 1901. For severalmonths ill health deprived him of the privilege of meetingwith the Lord's people. He will be missed from thechurch and from the home and his companion, she is nowalone, knowing not perhaps where the billows of time maycast her, yet not alone for hath not our Elder Brothersaid, "I will never leave thee or forsake thee." Dr.Hammond's death was calm and peaceful, as befits the deathof a saint.
